Thoughts and Musings

Thinking About TPE

I’ve always analyzed everything.

Sometimes I wish I didn’t.

Sometimes I envy people who can simply experience life without dissecting every thought that crosses their mind. But that’s never been me. If something matters to me, I examine it from every angle I can find. I ask questions, not because I’m looking for flaws, but because I’m looking for understanding.

Lately, those questions have been about Total Power Exchange.

The more I think about TPE, the more convinced I become that it can be one of the healthiest relationships two people will ever experience. At its best, it asks for honesty, accountability, communication, trust, responsibility, and consistency. Those are qualities every relationship should probably strive for.

So, this isn’t me questioning whether TPE can be healthy.

I believe it can.

What I’ve been questioning is something else.

At what point does giving someone authority over your life stop helping you grow and start replacing your own identity?

I don’t ask that because I believe there’s an obvious answer.

I ask it because I don’t think there is one.

Every meaningful relationship changes us.

The people we love influence our decisions. They shape our priorities. They encourage us to become better versions of ourselves. That isn’t unique to BDSM. That’s simply what happens when we allow another human being to matter.

TPE just does it more intentionally.

Which is probably why I find it so fascinating.

I’ve read people say that the goal is to lose yourself completely in your Dominant.

I’ve read others insist that you should never lose yourself at all.

Neither answer completely satisfies me.

Maybe the goal isn’t losing yourself.

Maybe the goal is allowing someone to help shape the person you’re already becoming.

Those feel like two very different things.

The more I think about it, the more I find myself wondering where identity actually lives.

Is my identity found in the choices I make?

The values I hold?

The way I treat people?

Or can it slowly become so connected to another person that, over time, I stop recognizing where I end and they begin?

And if that happens…

Is that still healthy?

Or has something quietly changed?

People use the word codependency quite often, especially when talking about power exchange. Sometimes I think it’s used too casually. Other times I wonder if it’s something that can happen so gradually that neither person notices while it’s happening.

Perhaps codependency isn’t measured by how much authority is exchanged.

Perhaps it’s measured by where your sense of self begins to reside.

Can I trust someone with nearly every aspect of my life and still remain unmistakably me?

Can I surrender completely without expecting another person to become the sole source of my identity?

Can someone encourage my growth while I continue growing into the person I was always meant to become?

Those are the questions I keep coming back to.

Not because I doubt TPE.

Quite the opposite.

I think something this profound deserves to be examined honestly.

Maybe healthy TPE isn’t defined by how much control one person has over another.

Maybe it’s defined by whether both people continue becoming healthier, wiser, and more authentic because of the relationship.

I don’t know if that’s the answer.

But tonight, it feels like the right question.

And sometimes, asking the right question is more valuable than pretending to have the right answer.
